A personal secession: part two

In part one of this I urged liberty minded individuals to disengage from the incessant, pointless, and childish barb trading that you see in virtually every news article and social media site, and to deprive oxygen from the fires that so many apparently thrive on stoking. Seriously, if you get your kicks out of going around online and poking each other in the eyes then there’s something wrong with you. I wanted to take a brief moment to give an example I recently saw of just how inane it has become.

WARNING: Some bad language and some even worse grammar. Also, sorry guys, I covered up the bikini-clad super model.

Yes, I liked Sports Illustrated Swimsuit on Facebook. Sue me. Ignore that and look at this little snippet. Even a comment about a super model’s chest couldn’t escape from descending into an evolution vs. creation sparring match. Really? Has this not gotten completely insane? Kudos to the person afterwards who clearly had the same reaction. I know nothing about any of these people or what their actual beliefs are and I don’t care. I just don’t want this to be us anymore.

The primary reason I advocate “picking up our ball and going home” is that if you’re involved in their game, they’ve already won. No matter what intentions one has going in, it is impossible to come out untarnished. To fight on their turf is to preemptively agree to a set of ground rules that equate to, “Heads, I win. Tails, you lose.” Before the debate you must concede that you are a neanderthal who’s reached your conclusions by superstition and ignorance, are bigoted and prejudiced, and it is imperative to first denounce positions on race and gender that don’t apply to you before you can even attempt to make your first point. How’s that for a starting point? Your words fall on deaf ears. Progressives hold nothing but contempt for the breath you draw and the greenhouse gases you produce. The only way to win is not to play.

However, that in and of itself would be purely symbolic. The insanity of the left is often amusing, but the amusement is more than tempered by the fact that said insanity has so much influence on public policy. What’s worse is that the destructive nature of progressive politics needs to apply to everyone in order to have any hopes of enduring. It can’t survive when alternatives are available for comparison. That’s why progressives try to push everything to the federal, and untimely global, level. Big government cannot abide competition.

Is it enough to deny satisfaction to those that live to sneer? Have you ever stopped to think about where your money goes? I shudder to think. I’d hate to think that my favorite burger joint ends up contributing a portion of my money to campaigns to elect those that seek to diminish freedom. Many in the past have compiled lists to inform consumers of where their money spent goes to from there, both on the left and the right. It makes you think, for all the talk about wealthy people consciously paying contributions to support political objectives they favor, it seems it could be entirely likely for one to unconsciously spend money on any number of goods or services and end up effectively negating their own vote.

All that said, it is simply not enough to be in opposition. We have to firmly establish what we support. Without announcement, just action. Not proclaiming our objectives is actually very important. It has long been apparent that the nation would not be repaired from Washington. The politicians we send to D.C. are important but only after it is abundantly clear to them where they came from and how they got there. The key to that is a renewed support structure for the furtherance of liberty. The Tea Party and the blogosphere have already done an amazing job of constructing a network. But that is merely the nervous system. I’m speaking of a whole structure.

Imagine it. A society within a society at large. Growing increasingly independent of the forces that work to increase government oversight in order to insulate from intrusion and mitigate the influence of progressivism. With every new individual comes a unique combination of attributes to fulfill a role that further separates from collective, planned society constructs. A structure that plays its hand close, is not provoked by epithets or inflammatory statements, and when it makes its voice heard it will be very loud and clear. During the election cycle.

Did I mention I’m an idealist?
