A Racist Around Every Corner

America was a different place in the 1950’s. For most of us, watching an old rerun of “Leave It to Beaver” is our window into that long ago time. For black Americans, it was not so idyllic. Segregated restrooms, restaurants, and movie theatres were the law in the southern U.S. Violence against black Americans was often swept under the rug.

But the one thing that affected all Americans was the threat of the spread of communism world-wide. The threat, it seemed, was everywhere. When Americans gathered around their TV sets in the evening it was there. When kids spent their Saturday afternoons at the movie theatre, newsreels showed them that even the most trusted people in their lives could be part of the “red menace”. Beware! A communist could jump out of the bushes to snatch your kids as they walked to school. Neighbors, teachers, even the guy who pumped gas down the street, no one was above suspicion.

Just the mere accusation of maybe being a communist, was enough to threaten jobs and livelihoods that could follow you for the rest of your life. The careers of Hollywood actors and actresses were immediately destroyed if there was the slightest possibility that they were members of the Communist Party. The question, “Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?”, permeated the lives of Americans.

Now there is a new menace. A threat that a lot of people no doubt think is a much bigger and even more serious than communism. It can change the life of anyone who is merely accused of it in an instant. It is the menace of racism.

The “experts” on the new menace, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and anyone in the mainstream media will tell you it is everywhere. They will tell you that almost every minute of every day it is affecting black Americans. They will imply, if only up to a point, that every white person in America actively engages in it.

Are schoolchildren warned against it? Ask anyone whose child is actively being taught revisionist history in a public school. Christopher Columbus, George Washington, and anyone who could be considered a founding father is portrayed as an evil white guy. Of course children should be taught to be respectful of all people, that treating someone differently because of their race is unacceptable. But shouldn’t that apply to all children?

Can you lose your job and/or livelihood because someone merely makes an accusation of racism against you? The simple answer is gained by asking any company or corporation that Jesse Jackson has left in his wake of racial shakedowns. And in this case, liberals know all too well that it is not necessarily the nature of any evidence, if there is evidence, it is the mere accusation.

Are we getting to the point where the words “racism” and “racist” have lost their impact? Are they words that, because they are hurled at someone every day just don’t have the bite that they once did? Both of these words have been weaponized, meant to cause havoc in the personal and professional lives of the accused. Job loss, being ostracized, maybe even the loss of spouses and friends. They are no longer used to point out instances of actual discrimination. That seems to have ended long ago.

At the height of the communist scare, the House Un-American Activities Committee attempted to root out the commies wherever they were hiding. Do they need to re-convene and branch out to root out the racist around every corner?

“Are you now, or have you ever been, a racist?”

Sound familiar?
