Free DC Project Announces March on Washington Americans Protest Closed Monuments

Washington, DC – Amid growing concern about the unresolved congressional standoff over funding the federal government and the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare, many Americans have decided to go straight to the source of the problem with a series of demonstrations in Washington. The most recent group to join the fray, the Free DC Project, aims to protest the Obama Administration’s decision to close – and barricade – open-air parks and monuments across the nation during the government shutdown. According to the group’s website, the purpose of the march is to “send a message to DC that we will not be denied access to monuments built by our tax dollars to honor our heroes and heritage.”

“People are tired of being used as pawns in the political chess games of Washington,” said Joel Kurtinitis, an Iowa activist who formed the Free DC Project after becoming frustrated with what he called “political theatre by a Washington Elite out of touch with main street America.”

While Americans from across the political spectrum have expressed anger at the closure of the parks and monuments, the message of the Free DC Project has particularly resonated with conservative groups, who see the President’s choice to close open-air parks and monuments as purely vindictive. “These are America’s monuments and are largely unmanned,” said Ken Crow, co-founder of TeaPartyCommunity.com. “The President is blocking them in an attempt to inflict pain. This action is not only childish but insulting, and we as Americans will not stand for it.”

A number of legislators and political figures have been invited to attend the event, which is open to all, but as yet no speakers have been announced. “The purpose of this event is not to promote a single person or organization,” said Kurtinitis. “The purpose is to remind the American People that we are citizens, not subjects, and that no party or president has the right to take from us what is ours.”

The event is planned for Saturday at noon, in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Authorized and paid for by The Free DC Project
