Audience Roars for Rick Perry

Texas Governor Rick Perry opened up day two of CPAC with thunderous applause and cheers bringing the early morning crowd on their feet.  After watching him command the stage, it’s hard to imagine him not running for president in 2016. It’s easy to see what his campaign message would be: take a look at red states versus blue states, and determine what works best for the people.

The obvious difference between red and blue states is that, as Perry’s said, “the freedom of the individual comes first.”  He pointed to the achievements of his fellow Republican governors such as Nikki Haley (SC), Scott Walker (WI), Bobby Jindal (LA), and Rick Scott (FL) who have overseen successful state governments.

”What is the common denominator in these states?” Perry asked.  ”It is conservative governors, who cut taxes, who control spending, who invest in jobs.  It is conservative governors who trust the people more than the machinery of government.  It’s conservative governors who know the freedom of the individual must come before the power of the State.”

He discussed the contrast between those states and the not so prosperous blue states like New York and California.

”From east coast to west coast, no two states have lost more personal income to other states than New York and California,”

The most memorable part of Governor Perry’s speech was towards the end when he emphatically said,

“It is time for Washington to focus on the few things the Constitution establishes that the federal government runs: Defend our country.  Provide a cogent foreign policy.  And what the heck, deliver the mail – preferably on time, and on Saturday!”

After the speech was through a couple of women walked past the media area shouting to us to make sure we reported on the thunderous roar in response to Governor Perry. One said “You all reported on Chris Christie’s standing ovation, well this was way more than that so take notice!”

There is no doubt in my mind that this was one of the best received speeches of the conference thus far.
