Baltimore becoming Murdermore; 17-year old JR ROTC shot visiting girlfriend

Investigators said a teen was found shot in the head inside a vehicle in the 2300 block of Lyndhurst Avenue in the Windsor Hills neighborhood north of Gwynns Falls Park just before 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Paramedics took the victim, identified Thursday as Michael Mayfield, 17, to a local hospital, where he died.

So far, police have few leads and no suspects. No arrests have been made, but police said the person who shot Mayfield was a black man who was wearing a blue sweatshirt, jeans and tennis shoes.  His height, weight and age weren’t known.

Mayfield was a star baseball player at Edmondson High School, where the community is devastated by his senseless slaying.

Mayfield’s uncle, Matthew Drake, witnessed the killing. Drake said Mayfield was visiting with his sister and girlfriend. Mayfield left the home sometime around 6 p.m. and that’s when, Drake said, someone walked up to him, shot him four times and then fled on foot to an awaiting car up the street.

“I knew he was dead when I saw him. His eyes were closed,” Drake said. “The guy just walked to the car and shot him and he had another car waiting for him up the corner.”

When asked whether the thought this might have been a case of mistaken identity, Drake said, “(It) had to been. He never smoked a cigarette. He don’t know nobody. All he was doing was going to school. (He was at the) wrong place at the wrong time.”
