BEHNA: My Top 10 Reasons Why We Ended Up With A Donald Trump Nominee

With Donald Trump now becoming the GOP nominee for President of the United States, I thought it would be a good time to look back and reflect on my top 10 reasons why he was able to get to where he is now.

10) Trump Sold People As An “Outsider”

Because he was never someone who previously held public office, many assumed this is all it takes be be an “outsider.” But I believe this is only a part of that equation. One should also refuse to fund or support individuals who are considered the “establishment.” The fact is Trump has a history of giving money to Mitch McConnell and the establishment to defeat the Tea Party. Now as a businessman, the Trump base always claims that it was ok for him to give money to everyone because, well, he was just doing “business.” However, this does not have to be the case. There are many principled business people out there who choose not to give to anyone. Ultimately, Trump had the free will, and he chose to give money to many Democrats and establishment Republicans when he had no obligation to.

9) Current Events in the News

Trump ran on a platform of “telling it like it is”, while opposing illegal immigration and Islamic extremism. The individual cases of shootings, crossings at the southern border, and worldwide bombings that have taken place helped make Trump’s point, because voters remember when Trump ran with this outline from his opening speech to kickoff his presidential campaign.

8) Trump Had The Most Name Recognition

It certainly helps being a billionaire and in the media spotlight long before running for president. Trump never had to spend any resources and time to grow his name recognition because he simply had it already. Having the most twitter followers among all the candidates as well certainly helped spread his message in an age that relies heavily on social media and grassroots efforts.

7) Trump’s Presidential kick off Speech Struck A Cord

Trump’s opening speech definitely caught the attention of many, unlike many of the other candidates. He listed many talking points that, whether you hate Trump or not, was a breath of fresh air to his supporters. Because many politicians try not to go too far off the deep end, it was unique for Trump to not be politically correct at all in his speech, which is what many voters were satisfied with.

6) Voters Liked His Loud, Unconventional Tone

His tone and demeanor hasn’t changed much throughout the entire campaign. Although some like to say he has become more “presidential” or “professional” with his words, he still hasn’t stayed out of controversy throughout all the months. For example, as disgusting as it was for Trump to criticize Senator John McCain for not being a war hero because he was captured, this apparently didn’t bother his supporters. Because he originally ran as being the “politically incorrect” candidate, it seemed no matter what he said, it would always empower him and boost himself in the polls. No other candidate could have gotten away with everything Trump has done.

5) Voters Liked Trump’s Celebrity Status

Let’s face it. It was only 8 years ago when the left adored Barack Obama. And even though he had controversy in his past as well, he was looked at as a celebrity and becoming the first black President was on the mind of many of his supporters. Both Trump and Obama have this same characteristic, even if their bases accept this or not: Both were treated as celebrities, and the policy issues concerning them did not seem to be the most pressing question for either candidate.

4) The “Conservative” Media Propelled Trump

You know who you are when I say this. Whether it was Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, or anyone else who refused to vet Trump on the issues for endless months, the lack of a vetting process for him in the beginning months allowed voters to get on board with the campaign, and nothing would change their minds. Hannity also tweeted this below earlier today, and it is filled with so much irony. Coming from a Fox News host who refused to ask Trump a single, tough question.

3) Too Much Division Between Other Candidates

The more division there was between the other candidates, the more this clearly helped Trump. I would have to say of all the candidates, the most disappointing fighting within the party I witnessed was between the Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio camps. Although I was a big time Ted Cruz supporter from day one, I detested the fighting between them the most, because they’re both very similar in age, talent, conservative, and both Cuban with fascinating immigration stories. Also they were a couple of the final candidates remaining in the race, so when unity between the two was needed the most, the division still existed and the unification between them came too late.

2) He Was A Good Liar

Trump liked to sell himself as a conservative, and many bought into it. Nevermind the fact that Trump supports government healthcare, abusive eminent domain, or even Planned Parenthood. His claims of being politically incorrect and appearing as “tough” on immigration was enough for the populist and nationalist movements to get behind him. And keep in mind this was the same candidate who thought Mitt Romney in 2012 was too tough on immigration.

1) Lack of knowledge on the Issues

No matter the division, no matter the current events, and no matter what else happened, the bottom line is voters have free will to vote for whoever they want. Ultimately, the voters chose Donald Trump, and elections have consequences. I wish the voters would have looked much deeper into Donald Trump and take their time to ask themselves if this was the guy who deserves to be the GOP nominee.
