Ben Carson Rising! Iowa poll shows upstart surge

Retired world-renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson started rising in the polls almost immediately following the first Republican presidential primary debate.

He has kept rising in the polls since then. So much so that he has almost caught Donald Trump, who has enjoyed a fairly commanding lead in Iowa since his campaign was announced.

According to the latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register poll, 23% of respondents listed Trump as their first choice for the nomination while 18% listed Carson as their fist choice. Carson is enjoying a lead for the second choice with 14% of respondents choosing him for that. Trump is at 9% for the second choice. This amounts to a 32% response for either 1st or 2nd choice for each candidate.

Carson has been hitting the campaign in Iowa hard in recent weeks. His campaign has run more television ads in the state than anyone else.

Carson has also been making massive inroads with Christians in Iowa (who represent 40% of likely caucus-goers.)

The fact that both of the front-runners for the GOP nomination are both political outsiders who have never held any political office in their lives could be a telling sign for the 2016 election.

Carson has picked up nearly 1 million fans on Facebook since the first presidential primary debate, bringing him to nearly 2.5 million fans on the popular social media network.
