I am no conspiracy theorist, but when it comes to Benghazi and the death of four Americans on September 11, 2012, I play one on the internet.
This week Rep. John Boehner shocked fellow Republicans and those in the mainstream media when he announced he would resign as Speaker of the House and leave Congress in October.
Pundits everywhere are linking the timing of Boehner’s resignation to a growing group of conservative GOP members planning to force a no-confidence vote in his speaker’s position, but could they be missing the real reason behind his sudden decision to resign?
On Wednesday, two short days prior to Speaker Boehner’s announcement, NPR confirmed ‘the FBI have recovered a trove of personal and work-related Hillary Clinton emails that had been thought to have been deleted and lost from a private computer server.’
So what does the FBI’s ability to retrieve deleted Clinton’s emails have to do with Boehner?
It’s all about Benghazi.
Rep. John Boehner and seven other members of the House and Senate comprise a group referred to as the Gang of Eight.
Congress handles oversight of intelligence programs, including funding of such organizations. According to the National Securities Act ‘the President of the United States is required by 50 U.S.C. § 413(a)(1) to “ensure that the congressional intelligence committees are kept fully and currently informed of the intelligence activities of the United States.'” However, if a President believes it is essential to limit access to information about covert operations, rather than informing all of Congress, the president may elect to inform the Gang of Eight only under 50 U.S.C. § 413(b)(c2).
There are rumors and speculation aplenty about what truly occurred in Benghazi, Libya in 2012 and one reason it has taken so long to get to the truth is Speaker Boehner’s refusal to bring H.R. 36 to the floor for a vote convening a Benghazi select committee.
One persistent rumor about Benghazi is the United States involvement in an illegal gun-running operation. According to a recent report, ’emails reviewed by Fox News raise significant questions about US government support for the secret shipment of weapons to the Libyan opposition’ working to oust dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
If the story about the secret gun running operation is true, it is an operation of which the Gang of Eight would have been apprised, and emails substantiating the Fox News story may potentially be found through the FBI’s ability to retrieve deleted emails from Hillary Clinton’s email server.
So is Speaker Boehner’s resignation tied to the FBI’s ability to retrieve what Clinton thought were deleted forever emails?
We will have to wait and see, but given all but three members of the Gang of Eight are no longer in Congress, or set to retire soon, I’d say there may be something about Benghazi.
