Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali, Dead at 74

Calling Muhammad Ali the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time doesn’t describe his importance.

His career in the ring was intertwined with everything the was occurring in the tumultuous period of the 60’s through the 70’s.

People could love or hate Ali – but they could not ignore him and the same was true of the civil rights and anti-war movements with which he’s identified along with all the other social change that emerged from that period.

From CBS Sports:

The Greatest” has become “The Immortal.”

A three-time heavyweight champion in the ring and an undisputed cultural phenomenon outside of it, Muhammad Ali died Friday night at a Phoenix-area hospital after battling respiratory issues connected to his long-term Parkinson’s disease, a family spokesperson confirmed first to NBC and ABC news outlets.

Ali was 74.

“After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening,” said family spokesman Bob Gunnell in a statement to NBC News.

As word of his death spread, sentiments expressed to CBS Sports were predictably reverential.

“Muhammad Ali was Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Sugar Ray Robinson, Michael Jordan and Secretariat all in one magnificent package,” said Randy Gordon, former chair of the New York State Athletic Commission and author of Glove Affair, which was released in February. “There will never be anyone like him again.”

Just yesterday he was in the news about being admitted to the hospital with respiratory issues. I thought to myself could this be the end of an iconic fighter who once was so full of life?

Love him or hate him he was exciting to listen to and watching him box was one of a kind. He was brass and bold as he toyed with his opponents even predicting when he would knock them out. Sadly missed already as i saw his name in bold red colors that he had passed away. Rest in peace my friend the fight is over.
