BREAKING! Judge declares Freddie Gray case a mistrial

I’ve seen this before, and never understood why the jury can’t have the transcript. Why shouldn’t juries be given the full on the record transcript of all the witnesses right at the start of deliberation?

According to Reuters:

A Maryland judge declared a hung jury on Wednesday in the trial of Baltimore police officer William Porter, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of detainee Freddie Gray.

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams issued the ruling after the jury of seven women and five men was unable to each a verdict after about 16 hours of deliberations. Porter also was charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office over Gray’s death in April from a broken neck suffered in a police van.

Williams turned down a request from the jury of seven women and five men for transcripts of witness testimony, saying they had not been entered as evidence.

So, enter the transcripts into evidence. This is a complicated trial with lots of conflicting evidence and serious consequences for the other Officers trials as well as the city, so the system should want the jurors to be as informed as possible, and if they need a refresher on a point (by referring to the official transcript), that seems like a good thing.

Twitter just started moving on the subject:
