CAN YOU HEAR THEM NOW? Thousands walk off Verizon jobs in one of the largest U.S strikes ever!

I better not lose power to my Verizon FIOS!

Wow, I can’t believe this, can you? Most of us do not know the intricacies of what happens in most of these companies across America. We do not know what goes on because we don’t work here but usually they provide us a service that we live on what we need on a daily basis. I use Verizon products 24/7, so this could very well affect me in the jobs of that I have to do.

There are a lot of businesses out there that use Verizon, so I’m sure they are white knuckling it right now.

From Reuters:

Tens of thousands of Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) workers walked off the job on Wednesday in one of the largest U.S. strikes in recent years after contract talks hit an impasse.

The strike could affect service in Verizon’s Fios Internet, telephone and TV services businesses across several U.S. East Coast states, including New York, Massachusetts and Virginia.

Verizon and the unions have been talking since last June over the company’s plans to cut healthcare and pension-related benefits over a three-year period.

The workers have been without a contract since its agreement expired in August. Issues include healthcare, offshoring call center jobs, work rules and pensions.

“It’s regrettable that union leaders have called a strike, a move that hurts all of our employees,” Marc Reed, Verizon’s chief administrative officer, said in a statement on Wednesday. “Since last June, we’ve worked diligently to try and reach agreements that would be good for our employees, good for our customers and make the wireline business more successful now and in the future.”

The big problem with Verizon workers which the union does not mention is that a lot of these workers are just no longer needed. Technology has made it possible to reduce dramatically the workforce. But the union wants Verizon to keep all these employees they don’t need, and to keep giving them raises every year! Several years ago these workers were given the opportunity to advance to higher paying, more skilled, non-union jobs.

Verizon is not a charity, and if these people had taken advantage of what Verizon had offered them, they would not be in this position. It is also not fair that these workers expect Verizon to pay for retirees healthcare for life! Very few private companies still do that…….and now with Obamacare, there is no reason why these people can’t get their own affordable healthcare like every other retiree!

Do you think this will subside anytime soon? Do you side with the Verizon employee union or the company? Share your opinion (below) and add this to your Facebook/Twitter timeline.
