Common Core: A National Curriculum Nightmare

Common Core, or as I like to call ‘Commie Core’, isn’t anything short of a living hell for today’s educational curriculum. There are endless reasons why Common Core is horrible and should be repealed, but here are just a few reasons.

1) Cost

Some states are seeing the cost effects if the Common Core standards were to be implemented. In California, it has been estimated to cost taxpayers $1.8 billion. Governor Rick Perry of Texas has stated it would cost their state up to $3 billion, if it were to be implemented.

2) Sample Problems

Here are some ludicrous math problems under the common core curriculum. This is the first example: Solve using your place value chart and number disks, composing a 10 when necessary: 53 + 19. What does this mean?! It’s a simple math problem that should be answered with ‘72’ in a heartbeat. This is why more kids will continue using calculators for simple arithmetic. We were all taught to learn mental math for these types of problems when I was in school, and common core wants to steal that skillset away from these kids. I’ve also read stories of kids crying over their math homework under this draconian system, because it is far more complex and overwhelming than it already should be. Every single parent should be outraged.

3) Testimonies

There are parents all across this country who wants to stop common core and let everyone know how outraged they are. Glenn Beck also was behind the movie ‘We Will Not Conform’, which aired in over 600 theatres nationwide, and appeared on Hannity as seen below.

It is not just one or two parents against common core. It is hundreds of thousands, if not millions, who are outraged over the curriculum, and rightfully so. However, it is not just parents speaking out. It is also fellow teachers, including a Librarian from Tennessee speaking about her huge concerns.

Not only are parents at public schools upset, but parents at catholic schools as well. Many of these parents of the catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee were not too happy over Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki’s response. There was a petition of about 1000 parents calling for Listecki to reconsider his decision of implementing Common Core standards, but his June 9th letter responding to parents doesn’t show any indication that their request would be satisfied.

4) Government has no business in education

It is no coincidence that our schools and curriculum has especially plummeted since the creation of the Department of Education by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. There is no ‘one size fits all’, especially when it comes to education. Different states and local communities were fully in charge of education, and this is how it was before 1979. If education was good enough for countless decades before 1979, then it is good enough today as well. Keep on fighting the good fight, and I feel confident we will eventually stop Common Core.
