The Dept of Defense was Buying American Flags from…. China?

Thanks to the work of Purple Heart Vietnam vet and U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, a new law now requires that all “flags purchased by the Department of Defense (DoD) be 100 percent ‘Made in America,’” KCBS in San Francisco reported. Seems strange that we would need a law requiring this, doesn’t it?

Thompson introduced the legislation last year after learning that many of the flags used by the military were not made in America. He told the station, “I thought it was appalling our Department of Defense would have flags made in other countries,” He went on, “But it’s also important because we need to be making more in America.”

As strange as it may seem that the DoD would be purchasing American flags made in China, there is a an understandable explanation as to why it began. According to Fox News, in the days after the September 11 terrorist attack, “U.S. manufacturers could not keep up with the demand, so China stepped in.” Now, China delivers over $3 million worth of flags to America every year.

Right now this new law only applies to the Department of Defense so other government agencies may be using American flags made outside of the US.
