According to the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, Dinesh D’Souza was indicted on federal charges of violating campaign finance laws. The indictment states that D’Souza allegedly reimbursed his associates for political campaign contributions he instructed them to make for a single candidate. It goes on to say that he is charged with, “violating the federal campaign finance laws by making illegal contributions to a United States Senate campaign in the names of others and causing false statements to be made to the Federal Election Commission in connection with those contributions.”
According to CNN:
D’Souza allegedly made and arranged $20,000 in campaign donations to an unnamed campaign in 2012 and then reimbursed those who were directed to make contributions, according to the charges handed up in New York City.
Federal election law limits individual campaign contributions to a federal candidate to $2,500 each for a primary and general election campaign.
The law also bars any person from making contributions in the name of others or reimbursing another person’s contribution.
But while most reports are saying that prosecutors claim that charges came as a result of a “routine review by the FBI of campaign filings by various candidates after the Senate race,” Gerald Mullen, a co-producer of “2016,” believes the charges are politically motivated.
There is still more to know about this case and the charges brought against Dinish D’Souza and we will continue to monitor the story.
