Do You Have An Arsenal In Your Home?

An article which appeared on the Fox News website yesterday about a man arrested in New York City for threatening to kill white cops led with the headline “NYPD find arsenal after busting man who ‘talked about killing cops’”. The “arsenal” it turns out, consisted of one 9mm handgun and a 12-guage pump shotgun. Also found at the suspect’s home were two bullet-proof vests and a pair of brass knuckles.

Don’t get me wrong, the guy they arrested does appear to be a dangerous individual intent on committing murder and needed to be taken off the street. The serial number had been defaced on at least one of the guns, and he admitted to stealing the bullet-proof vests. I am very happy this guy was caught before he had a chance to take the life of another police officer and I hope he is off the streets for many years to come.

Aside from the ominous subject of this article however, is something that I find a bit amusing. I have no idea who wrote the headline for the article, but it must have been a native New Yorker who has spent much of his or her life confined to the city to have described two guns as an “arsenal”.

ShotgunThis headline writer would probably have been apoplectic watching some families unwrap their gifts on Christmas morning in the South. Obviously there are some cultural differences at work here.

I suppose I could chalk this one up to a member of the liberal media trying to indoctrinate the public into believing owning any guns at all is aberrant behavior, but this did come from Fox News so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and just assume it is just ignorance of the world outside New York City.

I do believe this explains a lot about how the anti-gun crowd gets so much attention and promotes the notion that Americans want gun control. With most of our news media concentrated in just a couple of big cities, they are woefully ignorant of life in what they condescendingly refer to as “fly-over country”, or as I put it, the rest of America. Their reporting, especially when it comes to guns, is naturally tainted by their limited understanding of life outside the city. What the rest of us view as perfectly normal and accepted is often portrayed in the press as abnormal or even criminal.

Many people expressed outrage at a recent ad placed by a gun control group depicting a kid stealing a gun from his parent’s bedroom and giving it to a teacher to get rid of because he didn’t “feel safe” having it in the house. Aside from the obvious stupidity of enticing kids to steal guns and take them to school, boys that age that I know wouldn’t have given the gun a second thought, and many have spent time with a parent learning how to fire it. Are there really kids who fear guns so much that they don’t feel safe with it lying in a dresser drawer in their parents’ bedrooms? Sounds like bad parenting to me.

Fortunately for America, most of us are not so timid and afraid of firearms. We own, carry, and fire our guns and enjoy good family time on the range with our kids where we teach them how to safely handle and use them.
