Obama and Netanyahu

Does Obama Have a Jewish Problem?

One of the most traditionally reliable voting blocs for Democrats has been the Jewish vote. More than likely because of a heavy Jewish population in super blue states like New York and New Jersey. In the 2012 presidential election, exit polls showed that President Obama and the Democrats garnered 69% of the Jewish vote. So why does it seem that the president and the Democratic Party not only appear to snub American Jews, but Israeli interests and concerns as well?

While it appears to be no secret that President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are not exactly BFF’s, the tension in their relationship has taken on a whole new turn as top Obama campaign officials have been dispatched to Israel to assist Netanyahu’s opponents in the March Israeli elections.

This comes on the heels of Speaker of the House John Boehner, (R-OH) inviting the Prime Minister to the United States to address Congress. The Speaker is permitted to extend the invitation, and Netanyahu is permitted to accept, but many administration officials are furious at Boehner for what they are calling a “breach of protocol”. In response to this, it was announced that neither the president, the vice president, nor Secretary of State would be meeting with Netanyahu during his upcoming visit. The reason given by the White House – the President did not want to be seen in any way as influencing the elections. Word on the street is that the White House is furious over this, and someone who is only described as “a senior U.S. official” proclaimed it a “spit in the face” of the president, and “there will be a price”. Rumors abound that the statements were made by Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett.

The President was also absent from the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The reason – he was on his way to Saudi Arabia to pay respects for the death of King Abdullah and to meet with newly crowned King Salman. Once again, the enemies of Israel come first.

Israeli flagSo where might this attitude about the only democracy in the Middle East, the only friend to the U.S. who is surrounded by nations who have sworn to destroy her come from?

It appears more and more, Obama sees Netanyahu as a big obstacle to things he would like to accomplish before he leaves office; Netanyahu would very much like to see Congress ramp up sanctions on Iran for their nuclear program. This of course flies in the face of the fact that the president is attempting to broker peace deals with Israel’s enemies. In a piece by Bill Kristol in The Weekly Standard, Kristol puts forth the notion that Obama wanted to be the president who helped create a Palestinian state. That will not happen during his presidency, and Benjamin Netanyahu is no doubt seen as a big reason why.

But maybe it started much earlier. For the better part of 20 years, Barack Obama and his family sat in the pews of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church listening to some pretty inflammatory anti-Semitic rants that passed as sermons. Could the Sunday morning lessons of the good Reverend becoming obvious in certain aspects of American foreign policy?

Will the Obama campaign machine be victorious in Israel in March? With any luck, the Israelis will see through it much quicker than Americans.
