Dominican American group wants to monitor the ballot count in Espaillat’s battle to unseat Rep. Charles Rangel

Claiming voter suppression, a national Dominican American organization and state Sen. Adriano Espaillat are demanding the Department of Justice monitor the high-stakes ballot count in Espaillat’s bid to unseat longtime Rep. Charles Rangel.

The Dominican American National Roundtable yesterday called on the feds to “investigate whether access to the ballot was denied or suppressed for Latino/Dominican voters in the Democratic Primary for the 13th Congressional District.”

Meanwhile, Espaillat, who is a member of the group, is headed to the state Supreme Court today to demand his campaign and the press be granted the right to monitor the final days of counting ballots in the hotly contested Democratic primary to unseat the 21-term Rangel.

As Rangel’s once-comfortable 6-point lead dipped to a razor-thin 802 votes over the weekend, the Dominican group claimed that many Hispanics in the upper Manhattan/Bronx district were told their names were not on voting rolls and that they were not offered interpreters.
