Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: Murderer or Martyr?

The jury has sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for his role in the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. The two pressure cooker bombs used by Dzhokhar, and his brother, Tamerlan, killed three people, and left more than 250 injured.

In the three days that followed the bombings, the Tsarnaev brothers became the targets of a massive manhunt. After killing a MIT police officer, and carjacking an SUV, the pair was involved in a firefight with authorities, during which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot multiple times. His brother, Dzhokhar, ran him over while trying to escape in the stolen SUV, and Tamerlan, the elder of the two brothers was pronounced dead at the scene.

On April 19th, Dzhokhar was shot while hiding in a boat in the backyard of a neighborhood in Watertown. He was taken into custody, and was indicted on April 22nd, while in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds.

According to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, he and his brother were self-radicalized, and he claimed that Tamerlan was the mastermind behind the bombings. They had learned how to make the pressure cooker bombs from an online magazine published by al-Qaeda in Yemen. He also stated that they were planning to travel to New York after the bombings in Boston, so they could bomb Times Square.

Were it not for the glitches in Boston, more people may have died in New York. While thankful they were stopped from inflicting further harm, one has to wonder what the sentencing of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev really means. His mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaev, continues to say that America will pay for what it has done to her sons. Their sister, Ailina Tsarnaev, was charged with threatening to “blow-up” her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend. As we can see, “the religion of peace” rears its ugly head again, to show that this kind of behavior is in their blood. While justice has been served, it is likely they will be viewed as martyrs to be avenged.
