Earth, Wind & Fire lead singer Maurice White, dead at 74

Maurice White, co-founder of Earth, Wind & Fire, died in his sleep Thursday morning, according to TMZ.

White died in Los Angeles after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was diagnosed in 1992 and his condition deteriorated in recent months, TMZ reports. The disease had progressed to the point he was forced to stop touring in with the band 1994.

The band had a string of hits, including “Shining Star,” “September,” “Boogie Wonderland” and “After the Love has Gone.”

White’s brother, Verdine, is also a band member.

From CBS News:

“My brother, hero and best friend Maurice White passed away peacefully last night in his sleep,” his brother Verdine White, also a member of the band, said in a statement Thursday. “While the world has lost another great musician and legend, our family asks that our privacy is respected as we start what will be a very difficult and life changing transition in our lives. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes.”

Although White wasn’t touring, he remained involved in the decisions involving the band, TMZ reports.

White was 74 years old.
