It’s ON! Ted Cruz Announces Run For President

Last night just after midnight, Ted Cruz became the first major Republican figure to officially declare himself as candidate for President in 2016. Cruz, who is expected to make the announcement in public at Liberty University later today, took to Twitter to send the massage “I’m running for President and I hope to earn your support”. Included in the Tweet was a short video:

Cruz supporters all over the internet rejoiced, while Democrats immediately went on the attack. BREAKING NEWS: Senator Ted Cruz, architect of the disastrous 2013 government shutdown, is running for president. pic.twitter.com/bOTr83Zk9z

For the record, I should point out that the attacks are not all coming from the Democrats. Supporters of the other potential GOP candidates are just as likely to attack Cruz as well, as would be expected in any hotly contested political contest. Just to give you a heads up, here are a few of the arguments they will use against him:

He was born in Canada and not eligible – This one has been debunked repeatedly, but like some other birther claims it never seems to quite go away. An article in the Harvard Law Review does a great job of explaining why the claim is false.

He’s a right-wing nut – Yes, and so is everyone who is to the right of Hillary Clinton according to the news media and other Democrats. These days, anyone who has not earned that label isn’t worth considering.

His own party hates him – Absolutely, the Democrat-lite wing of the GOP wishes he would just go away, which is all I need to know. The John Boehners and Mitch McConnells of the GOP really hate it when a member of their own party reminds them to keep their campaign promises.

He’s unelectable – Exactly the same thing they said about Reagan, and for many of the same reasons. Of course, we all know how that one turned out.

He’s too extreme – Okay, if following the Constitution and keeping your campaign promises is extreme, then I suppose he is extreme, but the Democrats seem quite capable of getting their most extreme candidates elected.

He’s too conservative – Very similar to the “too extreme” argument, just a little more specific. Cruz himself rebutted this one when he said “The greatest trick the Left has ever played is to convince conservatives that we cannot win”.

I like Cruz but (fill in the candidate’s name) is the only one that can beat Hillary – Hillary will beat Hillary, and at this point if the GOP can’t beat any candidate the Democrats put up, including Hillary, the country is doomed anyway. We might as well all go full Galt.

There will be other attacks from all sides, but that is just part of the process. The 2016 Presidential race is on, so to borrow a line from NASCAR’s Darryl Waltrip –

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity, Let’s Go Racin’!
