Jimmy Carter thinks Hamas Should be Legitimized

It’s hard to wrap ones head around the idea that giving more power to a terrorist regime would somehow lead to temperance and peace, yet that’s exactly the advice being given by former president Jimmy Carter when it comes to how the world treats Hamas.

He had this to say:

…the United States and EU should recognize that Hamas is not just a military but also a political force. Hamas cannot be wished away, nor will it cooperate in its own demise.

Only by recognizing its legitimacy as a political actor — one that represents a substantial portion of the Palestinian people — can the West begin to provide the right incentives for Hamas to lay down its weapons.

Translation: Hamas is kind of difficult to defeat, so just give them the political legitimacy they seek and all will be well in Gaza.

If not for his disastrous foreign policy record during his tenure as president, it would be easy to presume that these comments come as a result of some sort of age-related cognitive deterioration. But he is, in fact, thinking clearly — or as clearly as an anti-Israel leftist reasonably can. His position is not unique, as many on the left espouse the same ridiculous notion that Israel and the rest of the world should do more to work with Hamas.

While his statement is largely misguided, he did bring to point something that many in the media fail to acknowledge when reporting on the tragic loss of Palestinian lives, and that is that Hamas represents a substantial portion of the Palestinian people. Although innocents suffer as a result of this conflict, the Palestinians largely support Hamas’s efforts.

The Palestinian people elected Hamas and agree with the goal of destroying Israel and exterminating all Jews. With this in mind, consider how preposterous it sounds to give Hamas any more political legitimacy for the purpose of negotiation. What could possibly be the terms of the negotiation when the clear and stated goal of Hamas is the destruction of Israel and the eradication of the Jewish people?

Hamas does not believe that Israel has any right to exist, never mind as a Jewish state. It exists to eliminate Israel and her allies and this belief is the basis of Hamas’s charter.

If Carter and others want to see negotiation between Israel and the terrorists of Hamas, step one must be Hamas acknowledging that Israel has a right to exist and Jews everywhere have the same right to life as anyone else. Protip: Don’t hold your breath.
