Megyn Kelly Debate Heats Up on Whether Obama taking Black Voters for Granted

A debate on today’s America Live got heated when Megyn Kelly posed the following question to contributors David Webb and Tara Dowdell following headlines that Obama wouldn’t be speaking at the NAACP Convention: is President Obama taking the African American vote for granted heading into the November election?

Webb began by responding that he believes the president is playing politics when it comes to appealing to segments of the population. “There aren’t enough blacks to elect a president … Hispanics are a larger group, so he went and spoke to the national council,” he said. “This is about politics … he ran by drawing coalitions together, and those people went out and voted for him … so, unless they have a defined interest they can use, they’re not valuable.”

Dowdell fired back, saying she took offense at Webb’s suggestion that African Americans elected Obama because they were vested in his color.

“That is insulting, to say that we can’t think for ourselves, that we can’t discern policies … I hope you understand the harm you’re causing when you promote these stereotypes about the African American community.”

The debate intensified from there, with Webb answering, “It’s more insulting to take a group of people and say you have historically voted only for Democrats, and what has been the return on your investment? … When you have a predominance of voting by party and by race and by gender, then you have a problem.”
