Authorities claim that Garner died of a heart attack, but the original video (below) posted by the New York Daily News on Thursday sparked controversy.
In the original video, Garner claims about police harassment as several NYPD officers surround him. The officers suddenly rush Garner, who was allegedly selling cigarettes without charging sales tax.
After being placed in a chokehold, Garner, who was asthmatic, is heard saying he can’t breathe.
Garner’s death led to a rally on Saturday, which included his wife. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio cancelled a vacation to Italy over the original video, which he called “very troubling.”
“I watched it the same way a family member would watch it, and it was very sad to watch,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference on Friday.
According to The Washington Post, a new video (below) has surfaced, which purports to show about seven minutes after Garner was placed in the chokehold and collapsed on the sidewalk.
Garner lays motionless while a police officer says, “Come on, guy, breathe in, breathe out, all right?”
Only minutes earlier, the police officers had ignored Garner’s complaints of not being able to breathe.
