#SOTU Speech: Obama’s Audible – Distraction, Distraction, Distraction ~ Stacy Rush

For those who pay close attention to politics, the State of the Union is a big game. It’s not THE big game, a.k.a. the Presidential election, it’s more of a divisional playoff.

With any big game, each side thoroughly prepares, studying the competition’s playbook.  They assign players according to position strength to the appropriate pre or post game slot, while the remainder of the team sits or stands in the gallery depending on whose team currently occupies 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

As a devoted fan stuck in a five-hour traffic jam caused by the one inch Atlanta blizzard, I had plenty of time to devote to pondering the current state of our union and the upcoming game.

Although Obama seems completely unaware it, he has been president for five years, overseeing an economic ‘recovery’ with unemployment going down, while government dependency goes up.  Add the disastrous Obamacare roll out to the record 92 million people currently out of the workforce, and one begins to understand Obama’s selective amnesia as president.

With any good rivalry, smack talk is expected.  When the opponent has home field advantage, stoking the flames of the twelfth man’s fire hardly seems a wise move, and yet it is the move chosen by President Obama.  Rather than facing the opponent on the field, the president instead declared ‘game over’ before the first pass was thrown by leaking his plans to use his ‘pen and phone’ to decide the game.

As any good sports fan would be, I was overcome with anger.  You don’t declare yourself the winner without playing the game.  But after three hours of white knuckle driving, the anger felt over the president’s audacious rhetoric gave way to confusion, and by hour five, the confusion gave way to clarity.  The president called an audible – distraction, distraction, and more distraction.

President Obama may not be the best leader on the team, but he is an excellent study. He understands his competition and exploits weakness better than most in the game.

Currently, his team is down, and his opponent has the momentum. Such desperate moments call for a hail mary play.  President Obama’s audible, go after the tie that binds the opponent’s team together. It’s mascot. The Constitution.

President Obama understands by attacking the very fabric of the team, his opponent will change the game plan in order to protect it rather than running the play that will bring them the win, Obamacare.

President Obama understands he gives a convincing speech about big government being THE solution to every problem.  He also understands that Obamacare is his speech in action, illustrating clearly how big government programs, even with the best of intentions, rarely work when taken off the page.
