Teen pleads guilty to killing WWII veteran; will serve 20-27 years in jail

Kenan Adams-Kinard changed his not guilty plea to guilty and will potentially serve 20 to 27 years behind bars for killing 88-year-old Delbert Delton in August of 2013. The killing reportedly happened during a robbery, and he and the other suspect Demetrius Glenn were 16 at the time.

“[Adams-Kinard] did a really terrible, terrible thing to an old man who was defenseless, and he needs to be punished for what he did,” the victim’s daughter-in-law Bobbie Belton told The Spokesman Review.

Under the terms of the plea deal that Adams-Kinard accepted this week, the 17-year-old will remain in a juvenile facility until he is 21 years old, and in total, he will serve 20 years behind bars with credit for time already served. Once released, he will serve three years probation. When it comes time for sentencing, however, that judge “is not bound by that deal.”

“The age of Mr. Kenan Kinard at the time of this incident, 16 years old, and including 16 year old immaturity, impetuosity and failure to appreciate risks and consequences of an act and also including the defendant’s home environment and the facts that no weapons were used in the commission of this crime,” Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell explained as the reason behind the plea deal.

Glenn is scheduled to appear in court on a motion this week.
