The terrorist attack on the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo has the world reeling as French police continue the search for two of the gunmen that carried out the deadly attack. Cartoonists killed over their depictions of the prophet Muhammad are being hailed as heroes by many in the media as French citizens have taken to the streets in mass in anti-Islamic protests. As these events unfold there are some hard facts about this attack that we must not ignore.
- We have to acknowledge that this attack was an act of radical Islamic terrorism; it was not an act of workplace violence or a man-caused disaster, nor was it just some lone-wolf nutcase bent on suicide-by-cop. It was Islamic, and it was terrorism; to say anything else is just foolishness. It is getting increasingly difficult to swallow the argument that these attacks are carried out by some fringe because many “mainstream Muslims” around the world are speaking out in support of the attacks. There are polls which indicat support for ISIS may be as high as 16% among the French population, and the numbers are almost as alarming in Britain and Germany.
- Although those who ordered, financed, facilitated, planned, and carried out this attack are wholly responsible, the ‘tolerance’ shown to the Islamic community in France not only did nothing to prevent the attack, it made it easier to carry out. France allowed the Muslim community to isolate itself from mainstream o society to the point of establishing “no-go zones” for the police with their own Sharia courts, permitting extremism to fester and give rise to the kind of people who commit mass murder over a cartoon image.
- French gun control laws did not stop this from happening; in fact, those laws most likely contributed to the success of the attack. The staff of the Charlie Hebdo, people who were very much aware that they were in danger of being attacked, was totally unarmed and completely at the mercy of their attackers; even the first two police officers at the scene arrived unarmed. If there was ever a time when a good guy with a gun could have made a difference, this was it. The notion that we are somehow safer when law abiding citizens are disarmed is insane. Those of you who live in cities and states with similar gun control laws need to be concerned for your safety. Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington D.C. are all likely places to be targeted by terrorists, and those cities just happen to have some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation.
- President Obama’s war of pin-pricks against ISIS has not turned it into a “manageable problem” and it never will. The gunmen who carried out this attack used military weapons, training, and tactics learned from training and fighting with ISIS. These fighters are returning to their home countries trained, equipped, and ready to carry out more attacks, and our porous borders mean we can only assume they are already here.
Unless we face the truth and get serious about fighting Islamic terrorism and secure our borders, these types of attacks will be coming to a city near you.
