The Conservative Cauldron 12/12/14- The CIA and Rolling Stone

Just in case you missed the busy night last Friday on The Conservative Cauldron, here are some highlights. The Senate Intelligence Committee released a scathing report on the CIA’s use of enhanced interrogation techniques, many of these methods put to use immediately following 9/11. The report claimed that the tactics used were far worse than the Senate Panel was lead to believe. Some of these techniques included waterboarding, sleep deprivation, and some death threats. The Committee came to the conclusion that this amounted to torture. Of course the reactions to the report were divided along Party lines. Many Republicans were pondering the timing of the release of the report. Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla, and Jim Risch, R-Idaho both called the release of the report a “partisan move”. But is it just another form of experimentation where the military is concerned? Liberals love to hate the military and try to undermine them at every turn. It is likely that this may be some sort of political payback for the mid-term smack down received by Democrats in November. The White House backed up the release of this report, seeming to be oblivious to the safety, or lack of it, of thousands of military and intelligence personnel around the world.

When newly elected Republicans go to Washington in January, their sole purpose for being there, the reason they were elected, is to stop the radical agenda of Barack Obama. Their predecessors however, wasted no time caving to the Democrats to pass a $1.1 trillion dollar budget bill to keep from no doubt being blamed for yet another government shutdown with just 48 or so hours to go before that would have happened. There is a lot of blame to go around, but Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, who worked the phones like a public television volunteer operator at membership drive time, should get the lion’s share. This behemoth passed by a margin of 219-206 with 67 Republicans going over to the dark side. The GOP was reportedly upset because this bill will fund what amounts to amnesty programs, and Democrats were peeved that there were not enough checks and balances for Wall Street and campaign funding. Many are calling for Boehner to step down. We will see if those cries get bigger, and who may step up to replace him.

The Harvard economist everyone loves to hate was in the hot seat on Capitol Hill last week. Jonathan Gruber testified before a House Oversight Committee on his remarks about American voters in several videos that surfaced last month. Committee Chairman Darrell Issa of California and Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina grilled Gruber on whether or not some of the comments he made concerning ObamaCare in the videos were truthful. Did the crafting of the healthcare law depend on the uninformed nature of some Americans? Was the law written in what Gruber called “a tortured way” on purpose so that the CBO would not score it as a tax? The best part of Gruber’s testimony may have been when Rep. Gowdy grilled him to the point of almost being speechless, in a way only Trey Gowdy has with liberal Democrats.

A recent article in Rolling Stone Magazine has put a spotlight on journalists and less than responsible reporting. The story of a woman named “Jackie” who claimed to be gang raped at a fraternity party at the University of Virginia, and the reporter who wrote the story, have come under fire for many of the “facts” of the story. While ultimately, some of Jackie’s close friends began to question large parts of the story, and the author of the piece, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, did not even bother to speak to the men accused of the crime. Erdely says that she did not do so at the request of the victim. No serious journalist would agree to such an arrangement, and it is a shining example of why new media outlets like Drudge, Breitbart, and The Blaze are becoming more popular every day, and old forms of media are quickly losing readers and viewers.

In the WTF segment, everyone has seen “grumpy cat” on the internet, mainly on Facebook. The chronically crabby cat is a favorite with meme creators. Well, being the feline equivalent of the neighborhood crabby old man who yells at kids to get off his lawn is rather lucrative. According to his owner, the cat has raked a whopping $99.5 million in the last two years. Moral of the story; if you have an aversion to cats, you might think about overcoming that.
