The Conservative Cauldron Podcast 4/10/15- Rand Paul, South Carolina, and Less than Loving Christians

There was a lot of ground to cover this week on The Conservative Cauldron. Big news but not really unexpected, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul announced in Louisville that he is running for president. Paul is positioning himself as “a new kind of Republican”. Elected to the Senate in the Tea Party wave of 2010, he has been an outspoken Conservative voice, with a bit of a Libertarian streak that seems to appeal to a lot of young people. He will have to distance himself from some of the unpopular foreign policy stances of his father, and appeal to not just Tea Party Conservatives, but a broad range of the Republican Party. He parts ways with many on the right on some of his social views, such as the decriminalization of marijuana. This has distanced him from some traditional GOP donors. What stands out for Senator Paul is the fact that he has no problem going to places like Howard University and other historically black colleges to speak. If the Republicans are going to take back the White House in 2016, this is an absolute requirement.

All eyes were on South Carolina this week as video surfaced of yet another police shooting. North Charleston police officer Michael Slager initially pulled over Walter Scott for a tail light violation. Long story short, Scott, who is black, exits his vehicle and begins to run, Slager, who is white, attempts to stop him by firing eight times at Scott’s back killing him. The community of North Charleston, with a population of around 100,000, half of whom are African-American are demanding answers from the police department. They see another Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner. The Mayor and police chief have both asked for calm from the community, and in a curious twist, the Scott family has asked Rev. Al Sharpton to stay away. Could this be a sign that every one is getting just a bit tired of Sharpton swooping in to stir it up? The question must be asked, when will we see videos of black cops shooting unarmed white men? It happens, the statistics bear it out, yet no one acknowledges it. Not sexy enough to be deemed newsworthy? The FBI and DOJ are investigating. The Department of Justice? That makes us all feel much better.

At a post-Easter prayer breakfast, devout Christian Barack Obama once again lectured Christians on being “loving”. In an obvious reference to the Religious Freedom Act debate in Indiana, the President said that when he listens to some of the things said by “less than loving Christians, I get concerned”. While the president administered this lecture, 147 Kenyan Christians were being slaughtered at a University specifically for their faith by Islamic gunmen. No word yet on whether or not the president lectured them on being less than loving.

Ferguson Missouri has two new City Council members who are African-American. Voter turnout doubled in Tuesday’s election despite bad weather. The candidates backed by protest groups did not win. Good luck to the new elected officials.

Finally, in the WTF segment, the Burger King restaurant chain is paying for the wedding and providing gifts for the upcoming nuptials of Joel Burger and Ashley King. They have been known as Burger-King since their days as childhood sweethearts. congratulations to the happy couple! Have it your way!
