The Democrat Obsession with Texas Gubernatorial Candidate Greg Abbott’s Disability

Texas Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott is paralyzed. He is confined to a wheelchair after a tree fell on him while he was jogging in 1984. Abbott has clearly thrived in his career despite his disability.

But Abbotts opponent, Wendy Davis, released a bizarre political ad highlighting Abbott’s wheelchair:

The Dallas News article cited in the attack ad, as an aside, was written by an incredibly partisan “journalist,” Christy Hoppe, who recently tweeted that “…Big $$ helps drive TX GOP campaigns.”

In June, it should be noted, the local CBS affiliate reported that Wendy Davis “has financial backers in every U.S. state and has collected nearly four times as much — at least $3.6 million — from outside Texas as her opponent, Republican Greg Abbott.” Should gubernatorial candidates receive a majority (or any?) of their funding from outside the state in which they run? Is that what voters want?

Wendy Davis, “whose claim to fame is a filibuster in the state legislature against abortion limits that later were passed anyway,” as aptly described by Howard Portnoy at Liberty Unyielding, ‘brushed aside criticism of her controversial ‘wheelchair ad’ and repeatedly blasted her Republican challenger as a ‘hypocrite,'” as reported at Politico.

Greg Abbott addressed the ad on Sean Hannity’s show at Fox News. He said,

If she wants to attack a guy in a wheelchair, that’s her prerogative…As for me, I’m running a different type of campaign…

In January, James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas released a video of  members of the group Battleground Texas mocking Greg Abbott for being disabled, as reported at the Examiner. The disturbing insight into the minds of these political activists whose plan is to “turn Texas blue,” was revealed when one member says “[F]irst of all he’s not good looking…He doesn’t speak very well. He doesn’t have a good personality. And he’s in a wheelchair.” The comment was greeted by laughter, and another activist, Lisa Wortham, a deputy voter registrar chimed in, “I’m really wondering how this is going to work out, since he’s in a wheelchair, and the slogans are ‘stand with Wendy.”

When asked about forging signatures on absentee ballots, Wortham mockingly covered her ears and then said, “[P]eople do that all the time.”

But the bizarre progressive obsession with Greg Abbott’s disability does not end there, unfortunately. In March of this year, MSNBC’s Zachary Roth wrote:

The simple sight of him in his wheelchair—matchstick-thin legs dangling in front of him as he maneuvers himself around—is enough to set him apart from the parade of conservative Republican white men who talk about helping the job creators and seem never to have suffered a day in their lives.

Fortunately for Greg Abbott, Davis is trailing in the polls, which may explain her desperate attack ad.
