Obama is at work again trying to close Guantanamo Bay. The White House is contemplating options by overriding a congressional ban that bars bringing the detainees to the United States. In his 2014 State Of The Union address, he said this was the year Congress should lift remaining restrictions on detainee transfers and close Guantanamo.
A senior administration official said Obama is ‘unwavering in his commitment’ to close it. We must remember Obama promised he would close it within his first year, and although that has not happened, this issue will not be going away anytime soon.
However, a Gallup poll from June showed only 29% support closing the bay, while an overwhelming 66% oppose it, and for very good reasons. If Obama always claims to be for the people, he should listen to what most of them want, and in this case, they don’t want it closed. He says he prefers to work with Congress on this, yet why would he say that if he’ll eventually take unilateral action if he doesn’t get what he wants? Obama always claims he wants to work with them, to present himself as some constitutional expert, when in reality he despises them and takes executive action when he wants.
Earlier this year, Obama also released five of the most dangerous detainees in exchange for Bowe Bergdahl without any say from Congress. This president is fighting tooth and nail to close a facility that houses some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world, while he declines to make a simple phone call to release our own Sgt. Tahmooressi, who is still suffering in a Mexican prison cell.
Nobody in their right mind would want to close Guantanamo Bay. We can’t afford to release them, and if Obama does, they would have to either be transferred to American prisons, or released back to their original countries. While the mainstream media keeps throwing softballs to Obama regarding this and every other issues, the American people need to keep their voices heard and let Congress know we don’t want Guantanamo closed.
