Veteran placed small memorial in park to honor those who served; He never expected this backlash!

When a local veteran placed a small memorial in a public park in Iowa to honor those who have served in the military, he never thought it would cause this much controversy…

According to Conservative Tribune, the memorial features a statue of a silhouetted soldier holding a rifle on bended knee in front of a small cross that is at the base of an American flag. Though the memorial is both touching and beautiful, it has drawn criticism from the liberal group Americans United for Separation of Church and State, who feel it is “offensive.”

The AUSCS is now demanding that the memorial be removed from public land.

“The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits government bodies from promoting religion on public land,” a letter from the group proclaimed, giving the town only 30 days to remove it.

The mayor of Knoxville, Iowa quickly released a statement saying that he is “shocked” by the negative response.

“I’m shocked by the reaction of this. There are several of these around town. You see them all over the place,” said Mayor Brian Hatch. “We don’t want to offend anyone. At the same time, there are a lot of people who feel strongly about the veterans. So we have to take both sides into account.”

A rally has been scheduled for August 30 to support the memorial, and a city council meeting will take place on September 8 to take public comments and figure out how they will respond to the liberal group’s demands.
