What was the Chilling Motive behind a Prison Employee Helping Two Murderers Escape?

It seems that the plot continues to thicken in the case of the two escaped murderers from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York more than a week ago. The two men, David Sweat, 34, and Richard Matt, 48, were given tools to aid in their escape by Joyce Mitchell, 51, who worked as a seamstress in the tailor shop at the prison. She was also supposed to be their getaway driver, but went to a hospital instead where she was treated for a panic attack.

While some women are sought out by cunning criminals who see in them vulnerability which makes them easy to manipulate, the question in this case seemed to be, “Why would a married woman making in excess of $53,000 annually help two murderers escape from prison?” We may now know the motive. Joyce Mitchell had been under investigation at one point for having an improper relationship with David Sweat. Prison officials were unable to find sufficient evidence to warrant disciplinary charges being brought against Mitchell; however the two were separated for an undisclosed period of time.

Joyce Mitchell’s husband Lyle was employed by the prison as well. Mitchell had allegedly stated that she was ready to “move on” with Sweat and Matt after their escape, and once again the reason why may be clear. It appears that Joyce Mitchell may have agreed to help the pair escape in exchange for killing her husband. It seems that she got cold feet at the last minute and backed out. She now claims that she was worried for her husband. In reality it seems that she is worried only for herself, and hopes that by cooperating with police she can now avoid a hefty prison sentence. She was probably excited by the thought of it all and hoped that she and Sweat would be the next Bonnie and Clyde. Perhaps she forgot how that story ended, and in the end came face-to-face with the harsh reality of it all.

What should Joyce Mitchell’s punishment be in this case? Leave your thoughts below, and please share this story on Twitter and Facebook.
