What’s this, Huffington Post Snubs Minority Rights Group ???

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service’s recent announcement that they are considering offering short-term loan products has touched off a worthwhile debate about financial decision-making and government intervention in the marketplace.  The Huffington Post, unfortunately doesn’t seem interested in the debate.  In response to a column by the NAACP’s Dedrick Muhammad in the Huffington Post in support of Postal Service lending, the Center for American Racial Equality (CARE) drafted a cogent, substantive response taking an opposing viewpoint (read the piece below or by clicking here).  Unlike most news outlets, particularly online platforms, the Huffington Post’s ideology apparently got in the way of legitimate debate.

In the rebuttal, CARE takes the position that the Post Office lending plan would result in less choice and less personal financial freedom for America’s minority communities that rely on short-term loan products.  He suggests Mr. Muhammad’s position, and that of other Black leaders, feeds a perception that people of color are victims who are not smart enough to make their own financial decisions and must rely on government sponsored solutions.

“We had hoped that an organization like the Huffington Post, which holds itself out to be a legitimate news organization, would offer us the ability to provide an alternative viewpoint,” stated Dwayne Carson, Executive Director of CARE.  “We were disappointed that despite multiple attempts to reach the Black Voices section we were ignored.  It wasn’t a space issue.  It was an editorial decision.  One can only conclude that our message of personal responsibility and a free-market approach to empowering America’s Black community have no place at the Huffington Post.”

CARE transmitted it’s response to Mr. Muhammad’s article on March 3, 6, and 11th.  Follow-up calls were also made to the Huffington Post.  The CARE received no response to its inquiries.

“The Huffington Post is now a member of the White House Press Corps,” continued Carson.  “They need to start acting with some journalistic ethics and stop shielding those with whom they may be ideologically aligned from legitimate debate.”
