Who is Really in Control of Your Opinion? You or The “Big Six?”

As a member of The Wayne Dupree Show I recently had the opportunity to speak at Patriots Rally for Freedom in San Antonio, Texas regarding “New Media” and its importance in preserving our Republic. In the speech I mention the small number of companies who control most everything Americans see, read and hear on a daily basis and was struck by number of people who commented they had not previously heard this information.

In the 1980’s over fifty companies were in control of 90% of the media we consume as Americans, unfortunately, today this number has dwindled to six.  Six companies and a little over 230 executives essentially tell you what they want you to hear and not much else.

Given the average American watches approximately 150 hours of television per month, these firms have a great deal of influence not only on the culture, but also on your opinions whether consciously you realize it or not.

In addition to the news, the “Big Six”  control network and cable television, motion pictures, music, and the internet. If you study the changes in American culture over the past twenty years, you will see the slow creeping in of an agenda through each media form consumed.

During the past year alone, there are many examples of agenda based story lines intended to shift opinions or our culture. On Disney, you will find the over sexualizing of our children presented in the form of entertainment where on a show intended for preteen girls, one tells her friend, “don’t like him, everyone wants to date him, even the boys.”

You will find immigration reform being softly pushed through the story line on Rake, a new show on Fox where Greg Kinnear plays a man so vile, the only reason his assistant does not quit is because she is in the country illegally and cannot find another job.

You will witness the LGBT agenda being promoted on ABC’s Modern Family where the entirety of this year’s season premier was dedicated to celebrating the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage.

So much has the culture in our country shifted that we find a networks willing to fire a man for speaking Christian beliefs, and NFL commentators poking fun at a man who preaches the gospel, while holding on high the first openly gay player to enter the draft.

A small number of firms controlling every message we see, hear and read is a problem for America. Regardless of what side you believe you are on politically, the fact is, if a news story affects the bottom line of the “Big Six, you will likely never hear it and this centralized control is why new media sources, research and forming your own opinion is critical.

I have no idea where Conan O’Brein lands politically, but the video below, although meant to be funny, illustrates the point well. If the Christmas gift story referenced in the video is being told in newsrooms from coast to coast while using the same talking points, should we not assume other more important stories are spoon fed to us through our “Big Six” media consumption, as well?

Think. It is not illegal yet!
