Why Does The Left Fear Religious Freedom?

There are two things that we should never have to do in America – one is to pass something called the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act”, and the other is to have to defend doing so. Was America not established as a place where religious freedom was protected? Unfortunately, we now live in an America that has been fundamentally transformed from the bastion of freedom it once was to a prison of political correctness. Welcome to Obama’s America.

With a signature from Governor Mike Pence, Indiana recently became the TWENTY-FIRST state to pass legislation intended to protect the rights of individuals to conduct business without having to violate their religious beliefs. The bill is based on a federal statute signed into law in 1993 by that hard core right-wing nut Bill Clinton. The bill was introduced by another famous right-wing zealot, Congressman Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and passed the House of Representatives unanimously and the Senate with only three dissenting votes; bipartisanship at its best.

For some reason the Left has decided to turn on the state of Indiana for joining the ranks of other states who have adopted Democrat’s own legislation. Calls for boycotts and travel bans to the state of Indiana are now filling the headlines as Liberal hysteria spreads. Do these people really fear religious freedom that much? I guess this is easier to understand when you remember these are the same people who booed God on live television at their national convention.

It is worth noting that among the states that have already adopted similar legislation is the State of Illinois which passed its version in 1998 with the support of then State Senator Barack Obama who now criticizes Indiana for doing exactly the same thing. It is also worth noting that despite the RFRA being adopted by the federal government and twenty-one states, the law has not once been used to justify the type of discrimination the Left is saying will be the result of Indiana’s law.

Attacks on religious freedom are not limited to Indiana however, just this week the Obama administration decided the Catholic Church can no longer require its employees to honor the sacraments of the Church.

At this point we should be used to hypocrisy from the Obama administration, but I would be remiss if I failed to point out just one more glaring problem with Obama’s criticism of Indiana. The President is critical of Indiana’s passage of the law because he suddenly believes it will result in discrimination against gays, yet he is determined to reach a deal to provide nuclear weapons to a country that executes homosexuals.

Think about that.

What is actually at stake here is the Left’s ability to attack Christian bakers and florists for not providing their services to gay weddings. While this issue might seem trivial to some, if we do not stand up to these attacks the implications are quite serious. For example, will Christian doctors be forced to perform abortions?

Perhaps the Left should consider the possible consequences of their position. For instance, if my friends in Abbeville Ga. decided to hire a Muslim caterer to cook at their annual Wild Hog Festival, or perhaps they could be asked to cater the Chicago Baconfest. The possibilities are endless, but the point is clear.

The point being that anyone who fears religious freedom should consider the consequences of the loss of religious freedom in this country. For the rest of us, we should have to question the motives of those who fear religious freedom, and wonder why they are so fearful that we might exercise a freedom we have held since this country was founded.

Think about THAT.
