Republican Presidential primary candidate Carly Fiorina was the shining star in Fox News’ second tier debate last week, prompting some to speculate that her performance might well catapult her into the top tier. One of her more memorable lines, perhaps the one most often repeated, came in response to a question about Donald Trump: “I didn’t get a phone call from Bill Clinton before I jumped in the race. Did any of you get a phone call from Bill Clinton? I didn’t. Maybe it’s because I hadn’t given money to the foundation, or donated to his wife’s Senate campaign.”
There’s just one small problem: Carly Fiorina not only received a call from Bill Clinton (or someone working for him), she answered that call and appeared on stage with both Bill and Hillary when she spoke at an event sponsored by the Clinton Global Initiative in June of last year.
Clinton Global Initiative America is an annual event which was held in June of 2014 in Denver, Colorado and featured remarks by Hillary Clinton and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. Fiorina participated in The Case for Economic Justice: Meet the Press Panel, a forum moderated by Meet The Press host David Gregory, which also included 4 other panelists including former President Bill Clinton.
Fiorina’s comments on Trump were in reference to a story in the Washington Post about a private phone call Trump received from Bill Clinton in May, prior to Trump’s decision to enter the 2016 Republican primary. Although Mrs. Fiorina was not privy to the content of the phone call, she clearly insinuated that Clinton may have encouraged Trump to enter the race. Trump denies that the phone call affected his decision, saying his mind was already made up before the call took place.
Just as we don’t know the details of the conversation between Trump and Clinton, we also have no way of knowing the details of any conversations that may have taken place between Mrs. Fiorina and either of the Clintons during their time together in Colorado.
